How to use this timer

The current GRE Analytical Writing section contains one 30-minute Analyze an Issue task. There is no Analyze an Argument task on the current GRE. Essays are graded 0–6 by trained human raters and e-rater.

  1. Plan (5 min) — Brainstorm your position and two or three supporting points before writing.
  2. Write (20 min) — Draft your introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Aim for 400–600 words.
  3. Review (5 min) — Check for clarity, transitions, grammar, and any unsupported claims.

For official Issue prompts, use the ETS Analyze an Issue task page. Every essay on the real test is drawn from this published list.
